Christian recording artists The Gospel Guitar Guys are four Christ-centered, fun-loving musicians from Church of the Servant in Oklahoma City. They started playing music together in September of 2002 when one of the church pastors asked Don Cole, to assemble “a bunch of guitar guys” to perform a special song that would support his sermon theme. About twelve guys showed up for this performance and following that “gig”, all twelve were polled to see if they would like to work up some additional gospel songs just for fun. Five of the guys took up the offer and discovered that they had a good sound and a good time so they worked and continued to grow musically. (Scott
Rowsam recently left the group to play full time at The Victory Christian Center in Oklahoma City.)
Their first CD was released in November of 2004. It was a collection of Gospel standards and more contemporary songs. Their second CD contains a number of Gospel songs from their musical roots of the 60's and 70's, while always keeping the G3 sound in place. The Gospel Guitar Guys choose music with a message that speaks to them. Since that time they have released an additional CD with all of the songs written by members of the group.
The G3 sound can best be described as “American Gospel.” It is a combination of Country, Blue Grass, Rock and Roll, and Blues. Their style is unique and not easily forgotten. Group members are Randy Reed, an Oklahoma City school teacher, Don Cole, facility manager for Church
of the Servant, Bob Kaiser, sales manager for a local company and Gary Rutz, retired from a career in medical radiology imaging sales. Their instruments include the guitar, banjo, mandolin, dobro, bass guitar, harmonica, keyboard, and several percussion instruments.
Most of all, their vocals are the key to the sound. It is difficult to list “who plays what” since they are swapping instruments for different songs but the results are always good and heart warming. During their performances, you may find yourself wiping both happy tears and emotional tears but you will not be bored.
The Gospel Guitar Guys play over 50 performances per year from living rooms to large venues. They pride themselves in being able to perform acoustically with no electronics or use their sophisticated sound system to fill a larger venue. G3 has headlined at the Oklahoma Opry three times, twice the Country Jamboree Gospel Night in Clinton, OK, twice at the Breckenridge Summer Music Festival, three times at the UCO Jazz Lab, the Oklahoma City Arts Festival, the Edmond Arts Festival, and throughout Oklahoma at many churches. The group also loves to lead Sunday school classes and church services through their personal devotionals and music. If you are fortunate enough to see and hear one of their performances, you must agree that no one has more fun or feels
the music more than these guys.
